A Blissful Coastal Escape: Our One-Year Anniversary in Bodega Bay

To celebrate our one-year wedding anniversary, my husband and I decided to unplug, unwind, and treat ourselves to a peaceful weekend away at a coastal getaway not to far from home, Bodega Bay. From fresh oysters to ocean views and relaxing spa treatments, every moment felt like the perfect tribute to our first year of marriage.

We kicked off the day with a scenic drive through the countryside, making our first stop at Wild Flour Bread in Freestone. This place is truly a hidden treasure. The heavenly aromas of fresh-baked bread greeted us as we lined up outside the bakery. We ordered one sticky bun, which was basically a giant cinnamon roll/monkey bread situation, and it was amazing, We also got the gouda flat which was very savory and tasty as well. We had to also take home a loaf of their rosemary garlic bread too. I would say the highlight of this visit was wandering through their charming garden out back, a peaceful little nook that felt like something out of a storybook. The flours were blooming so nicely this spring and everything was lush and green. Highly recommend making a stop here you will not be disappointed.

Right next door, we popped into Cochineal, a beautifully curated home goods and gift shop. It was full of unique finds ceramics, candles, jewelry, bags and books. After browsing for a bit (and making a few small purchases, of course), we hit the road again.

Next stop: Bodega Bay. We rolled into town and made a beeline for Fishetarian Fish Market, a casual spot right by the water. We shared a feast of garlic butter BBQ oysters, fish tacos, and raw oysters, each bite better than the last. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and exactly what we were craving.

With a little time to spare before our spa appointment, we decided to explore the coast a bit more. We drove over to Doran Regional Park and took a walk along the beach. The salty breeze, the sound of the waves, and the wide-open views reminded us just how lucky we are to live so close to such natural beauty. It was a short stop, but one that made a lasting impression.

Finally, we checked in at The Lodge at Bodega Bay, our home for the night. The atmosphere was serene and inviting, with sweeping views of the bay and a cozy, coastal feel. We were a little early for our spa appointment and our room was not ready to be checked in yet but they gave us access to the pool while we waited. We spent some time by the pool and hot tub, soaking in the peacefulness of the property and the golden late-afternoon sun. It was one of those moments where everything slows down, and you just breathe.

They had lockers in the bathrooms for us to use and there was a sauna as well. It was small but honestly not too crowded so it wasn’t bad at all. Finally it was our time to enjoy our relaxing massages at the spa. A much-needed dose of self-care that left us both feeling totally refreshed.

After our massages were done our room was actually conveniently ready to be checked into. Rei got the keys and we headed to our room. It was such a cute room with a fireplace that was set up and ready to go for us to burn a log later that evening. They also left us a cute note and some chocolates celebrating our anniversary, this was so cute and generous.

That evening, we dined onsite at Drakes Sonoma Coast, the lodge’s signature restaurant. The setting was elegant but comfortable, with thoughtful service and seasonal dishes that showcased the best of Sonoma’s coastal ingredients. It was the perfect place to toast to our anniversary, reflect on our first year of marriage, and dream about what’s to come.

We enjoyed our dinner as the sun was setting it was truly an amazing way to wrap up our day.

The next morning, we let ourselves sleep in and enjoy a slow start to the day. No alarms, no agenda, just coffee in bed, soft robes, and the sound of the ocean in the background. Once we finally got moving, we made our way to Spud Point Crab Co., a beloved local spot known for its fresh seafood. We split the famous crab sandwich and a cup of clam chowder, and both completely lived up to the hype. It was the perfect, satisfying start to the day.

On our way home, we made one last delicious stop at Valley Ford Cheese & Creamery. We picked up some artisanal cheeses and, of course, had to try their sweet treats. Rei got an espresso milkshake that was creamy, bold, and absolutely delicious, while I went for a classic soft serve cone, which totally hit the spot. We also loved their cute little back patio area. It was a cozy spot to relax with your snacks and we couldn’t get over the fenced-in area where cows were roaming nearby. It was so peaceful and so cute, the kind of small-town charm that makes these trips feel extra special.

Then, with full hearts and full bellies, we made our way back home. It was the perfect little weekend getaway—just the right mix of rest, indulgence, and celebration. We couldn’t have asked for a better way to mark our first year of marriage.
